The number of internally displaced people -those who flee their homes but stay within their country- reached a worldwide record of 71.1 million as of the end of 2022, an increase by 20 per cent from the previous year, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre’s flagship annual report. Rapidly escalating conflict and violence in countries such as Ukraine and Congo and disasters such as flooding in Pakistan forced millions of people to flee and join the tens of millions of people already living in prolonged displacement.
