I’ve been meaning to get through the final fantasy games at some point, I’ve only ever played FF14 and it’s one of my favourite games.

I’ve never heard of Aoishiro before, what sorta game is it?

It’s a yuri horror visual novel. It has so many routes and endings, the game comes with a flowchart menu.

          Yuri horror visual novel

Okay I’m sold, might have to check it out! Is it more of a psychological horror kinda game or like a jumpscare-y kinda horror? I don’t do very well with jumpscares 😅

Also kinda weird I have two Yuri horror games on my to play list now, the other being Signalis, or at least Ive seen a lot of sapphic art of characters from that game anyways hehe

No jumpscares, and it’s not that scary.

The original came out in the early 2000s and the there was only a fan-made translation. Recently they’ve announced an HD remaster on Steam with an official translation, but I haven’t tried it yet. Same for Akaiito, the “sister” game.

It’s an old JRPG for the PS2, I’ve kinda become obsessed with the universe the game takes place in, the music, and the unique mechanics that the game has.

Basically the world is post-apocalyptic, and a mixture of fantasy and sci fi elements, there’s a new type of artificial being called reyvateils who using some very convoluted in game science are able to perform magic by singing in a constructed language that was made entirely for the game world called hymnnos. And in the game the way you improve their abilities is by using a machine to dive in to their psyche and help them get over trauma/mental barriers they have

The gameplay is different based on which part of the series you’re playing but in AT2 specifically it’s a turn based RPG with your turns having a time limit where you can attack, and then one where you are defending against enemies. You also have reyvateils accompanying you who act like super units who charge up a spell during combat which you can activate at any time to do massive damage.

The music from the game is really awesome and sung in part Japanese and part Hymnnos, I’d recommend listening to Exec_Sphilia, Exec_Phantasmagoria, and The heart speaks, if you’re interested in hearing the hymnnos being sung, and for regular music in the game id recommend Hearts Aflutter Chroche, Varna, and Waltz of the Gears

Always happy to rant about my special interest :3

Thanks for the explanation! Which entry do you recommend the most for starters?

The best entry is widely considered to be the second game, as it has the best gameplay and story in most peoples opinion anyway.

You can definitely jump in to the second game without playing the first as they do mostly have separate plots, but there are some cameos from the first game that are really important and the games do have a connected overarching plot.

The first game is definitely charming and has all the notable mechanics that make the series great but has a more generic JRPG plot to it and suffers from some mediocre writing and typical turn based combat, but if you can stomach playing through it and getting the true ending, it really makes the second game much more enjoyable.

The second game is what really made me fall in love with the series though.

I haven’t played the third game yet but I’ve heard it’s the worst entry in the series from other fans

Edit: so basically the first game “Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia” if you have patience to play through the game to get to the second game, or the second game if you’d rather experience the best the series has to offer right away

I’ve been meaning to play the whole trilogy again since I haven’t played the third game yet, I’m definitely going to use the patch when I get round to it :3

I haven’t got around the third one myself, tho that’s more because I am not a huge fan of the 3d aspect of it.

Also, do play AT II with the patch! It solves some of the wonkier part of the game and that one buggy boss fight

Depends on the genre tbh. The GOAT contenders are Outer Wilds, Transistor, Nioh 2, and Boundless.

I have a really long list of honorable mentions but those rise to the top today. If Blue Prince turns out to be as content rich as I think it is, it’ll likely make this list too, but I’m not done with it.

Blue prince was great, but I found that it got way too repetitive in the (post)endgame and didn’t have enough return on each playthrough to keep me engaged. Theres a real sense of diminishing returns on the exploration and secrets and it takes way too goddamn long to get anything done. I wish there was a way to make more persistent changes that carry through to the next day once you’ve reached the final room.
