In this case, Liberals did not understand the assignment. NDP voters did.
The stupidest electoral system… In my opinion the electoral system is the root of almost all problems north-america faces nowadays. It inevitably produces two parties and if you only have two parties your nation is done for because of polarization, the fighting and shifting the overton window, and so on. But mostly because it reduces the whole political landscape, which is very complex, to a a/b decision.
Ugh, that is so fucking annoying. Any time I see the conservatives winning straight up the middle… And there were some where it was the other way around, too, where Liberals could have won. I’m not sure the average person can do strategic voting, so please don’t think it’s only NDP. The problem I think is that it’s mostly the politics nerds who pay enough attention to what’s happening to properly vote strategically. Maybe I’m underestimating people but I think more normal people hear “strategic” + “Mark Carney is in the lead” -> “vote liberal.”
Voting strategically means voting for the party that best aligns with your political stance. In this case, the strategic vote would have been NDP. Those Liberal voters didn’t get the message.
Same thing happened in Windsor West.
NDP incumbent lost to the Conservative but the Liberals actually got more votes than the NDP did. NDP had 50% of their support stolen only for both of them to lose to blue. FFS
Remember the liberal partys unfulfilled promise of electoral reform?
Cons promised it too. Since the 1979 Pepin-Robarts “Task Force on Canadian Unity” report, both Ruling Parties have been dangling the promise of electoral reform. And swarms will keep blaming the NDP that we still don’t have it. Reality be damned.
Check some other posts here. People yesterday were already blaming the decimated federal NDP for not forcing the Liberals to give us PR by the next election, and the votes weren’t even finished being counted.
[edit bc I’m pissed and tired, but the internet doesn’t need more antagonistic language lashing out imo]
Isn’t the NDP person the incumbent? You’d think libs would vote for them.
If you assume liberals operate on honesty and ethics. If after ten years of Trudeau you still think so then… uh… yeah.
