Hi all, I was browsing Madeinca.ca and realized that “web hosting” for me means VPS but means “here’s a Wordpress instance” to others.
I’m looking to host a basically nothing website - I just need to separate from my critical infrastructure. I see that Storm Web is $20/mo but I’m looking for $10 or under.
Any budget VPS recommendations?
Not sure why you’d need a full VPS for a “basically nothing” website, but you do you–it looks like Canadian Web Hosting has plans starting at $8/month. No idea if they’re any good though.
Well most of them offer a Wordpress or wix instance. I want to try flat file CMS and maybe joomla.
I’ll give that a look thank you
Edit: nope

Ah gotcha. Shared Hosting allows for flat CMSes as well–at least for me, I still get SSH access. Often hosts will advertise the “easy” options for cheaper hosting options, but you can usually get low-level access as well. VPS vs Shared Hosting is usually about resource availability, not what you can do with it (VPS will have guaranteed CPU/RAM, while shared options may vary).
For what it’s worth, I use DreamHost and run a variety of CMS systems (WordPress, GetSimple, and hand-coded), and I’m on a shared hosting option. They’re not Canadian, but probably most Canadian hosts will offer similar options.
Yeah I’m a little curious what “fully managed in”. StormWeb, for example offers nginx. I’d like to install Apache because that’s what I’m familiar with. I’d like to be able to letsencrypt, etc.
Ah, I see. Yeah, if you want manage the server at that level, you might need a VPS.
In my case, the host manages the server (I can make a few choices, such as which PHP version is available, but I don’t think I get to choose between Apache or nginx).
If the website doesn’t say explicitly, you can probably contact sales at whatever host you like best, and see what options they give you.
