    I tell this to people about flags all the time … any time you change the colours, image, orientation of a national flag … you’re announcing to everyone that you’ve broken away from the nation and are standing on your own with your own group now. You are are saying that you are no longer part of the nation, and that you’ve set up a new group that you stand for that has nothing to do with the nation. It’s an historic thing about adopting flags and especially new flags … especially during times when people couldn’t read - they might not be able to read your manifesto, but they certainly knew what a new flag meant. It’s an historic part of vexillology - the study of flags.

    The blue line flags in the US and Canada are a display that they no longer identify with the country they are part of … they’re wanting to stand on their own against everyone else.
