With the U.S. stepping back from its historical position as Taiwan’s biggest defender, China appears emboldened. How this ends is of course unclear, but Xi may be gunning for a popular distraction from domestic problems. (See also: 9/11)
I was more implying that this sort of sabre-rattling has been going on for more than 70 years, and even absent U.S. protection, my understanding is that Taipei is willing to blow up all of its infrastructure if attacked. Including TSMC, which would alone bring its own set of issues.
