There seems to be a lot of microblogging going around, but I want a place to put my writings that are much bigger. I know that having my own website is also an option, but I’m finding filtering ethical hosting providers and website builders to be a lot more difficult than I thought it would be, and I’m afraid that even if I find them, it’s going to be too expensive.

Honestly I’d not recommend Wordpress at all. It’s quite outdated and therefore a pain in the ass to extend. There are more modern solutions like Craft CMS, Kirby CMS or Laravel with Filament, though ActivityPub support might differ depending on the platform.

I don’t think this person is looking to hack on, or even host their own service. I think they’re looking for a not very expensive turnkey SaaS.

Sort of. I feel like I need to know my own priorities better because I’m not sure what I want wrt hosting. Because of general trust and privacy issues, of course self-hosting (at home) is the ultimate best option, but I think that might only be a long term thing and I can’t do it now. So I’m wondering what to prioritize right now - cost, reputation, or simplicity - because I’ve found quite a few options that differ in these aspects.

Writefreely is simple and can be free, but I can’t find very many public instances and have no way of verifying reputation.

Similarly, wordpress.com has been under fire for a lot of things and I’m not sure how I feel about hosting with them &- free or otherwise.

Everything else like random VPS providers feels like a gamble because I know nothing about them and it seems like a black box. And obviously, cost increases for what is essentially going to be a bunch of writings from one person.

      ?

Wordpress the software has one of the best extension frameworks of anything I’m aware of. It’s old, but it’s also well-structured, mature, and has a ton of support. There’s a reason it got ActivityPub support so early (in comparison to other similar outside-the-Fediverse platforms).

The leader of the company behind it seems to have lost his mind, but that’s not anything against the software. Maybe don’t get hosting through Automattic. The software as far as I know is still pretty good.
