The town literally uses design language to draw you to the green path. Reminds me of all the games that try to seem more open and nonlinear by making each level essentially made up of two loops, but placing eye catching lighting near the path that 90% of players are gonna take anyway.
I know Skyrim gets a lot of shit these days but I actually really love a lot of things about Whiterun, especially the market square this path brings you through.
When you’re playing frostfall (weather affects you) and ineed (need to eat, drink water, sleep etc) and can’t fast travel all the scattered taverns along the road are a godsend, and feel so realistic. Fill your water skin, buy some more food, warm up and sleep before heading off.

Hard agree. The Bannered Mare is one of the best taverns in any game. Still enjoy visiting whenever i go back to Skyrim
