I’m always pretty sad when I go back and check on new users that I had welcomed and suggested they post an introduction, only to realize they never did and never made another post…

I have a feeling some of those people are the “Fediverse is too confusing!” People, yet they don’t even try.🤦‍♂️

It can be that way, but welcoming people could also be scaring them away.

On FB I’ve joined groups to see that once a month the admin posts a “this month we welcome”-post, which lists and tags every new member. Every single time I’ve seen that I’ve noped out and left. Just let me creep in peace and quiet, and maybe I’ll join in … eventually.

@[email protected] I don’t do that. That’d be quite annoying considering I have almost 1200 follow relationships!

I simply reply to their “Hi Mastodon” posts with a welcome and suggest they do an introduction post if their post doesn’t include info about them. Then I usually follow them because I enjoy helping new people navigate this place.

It can be very confusing if you’re not tech savvy.

Generally I’m presuming that threads is sucking up lots of people who are alt-social curious. They may have just drifted to doom scrolling there.

Seems to be affecting BlueSky too. Plenty of Brazilians joined, but I’d bet plenty more joined threads.

And I’m not sure it’s spoken about enough. With Threads, big-social just artificially segregated the market (is musk/Zuck really a choice?) and are sucking the oxygen out of alt-social.

It’s imo THE issue with the threads embrace.

@[email protected] when you say this, like “the threads embrace”, are you meaning to say that in relation to Fediverse, in general, or specifically the Brazilian movement that’s happening?

It’s not clear to me and I want to be certain you’re meaning.👍

Yea generally in relation to the fediverse. Obviously not the whole of the Fedi, but there’s a lot of acceptance and embrace, notably from major masto instance admins, CEOs and AP authors.

Does anyone else actually even do this? Like - you really stalked people you talked to just once on the internet to check if they followed your advice?

@kitnaht stalked people? Nah? I follow people that seem interesting from their initial post.

And yes, I regularly review who I follow because I think it’s important to realize that people and interests change over time and we might not be still as compatible.

Why would you follow people and not topics? That seems completely backwards. Like going to a forum for something, and not reading any of the topics, but clicking on people and reading their interactions. That’s weird as hell.

          @kitnaht I’m not on a forum, I’m on a microblogging platform.

I host mastodon on my own instance.

Fediverse has many different flavors. I actually didn’t intend for this post to go to Lemmy, but Fedia.io is creating topics from hashtags used, regardless of the software used when making the post.

Asking someone to post an introduction is off-putting. Like when a new job makes you publicly introduce and say a “fun fact” about yourself. No one wants to do that, no one (but you) would be interested in reading it. I would not want to be on here if I thought that an awkward introduction was expected of me or considered valuable content. Maybe don’t come on so strong? Just a “welcome, glad you’re here!” is all you need.

@[email protected] well, you do realize we’re on different platforms, right?🤔

Some don’t realize I’m on Mastodon, where it’s normal to post an introduction and if they don’t want to, just don’t have to? I’m not saying "post an introduction or leave, dammit!"😅

To be fair, I usually don’t intend for any of my posts to go to Lemmy. However, Fedia.io or Mbin have started making posts based on hashtags added. Since Lemmy and Mbin are pretty entwined in a way that Mastodon is not, you see my post on Lemmy.

Though, maybe you know and still disagree.🤷‍♂️
