Fun fact a lot of times the pockets aren’t fake, but sewn shut. This helps keep the shape of the garment until it’s been sold.
I’ve heard a lot in recent years about women’s clothing having fake pockets, especially jeans. Maybe that’s what this is referring to?

My two-year-old’s jeans have bigger pockets than my wife’s jeans.
i think this practice exists to showcase clothing as more stylish than competitor brands. the main theory would be that people put things in their pockets which causes the pockets to buldge and display a less-than-perfect body shape. so clothing designers felt that they could get a competitive edge(and make ppls bodies look more shapely)… by removing the option of pockets altogether.
