My partner and I finally have all of our planning ironed out and did the math so we could get all of the yarn we needed while most of it was over 50% off, so stoked to get started on this journey!

Question: what is a “temperature blanket”?

And how does it differ from a regular blanket?

I’m not sure what OP means, but I have heard of temperature blankets where someone knits or crochets a blanket with 365 rows. The color of each row represents the average temperature that day (or the high).

But it could refer to a more vague temperature color gradient blanket as well.

Doing 1 row of single crochet based on the daily high temperature every day in 2024. Sorry i assumed it was ubiquitous when i posted it here. My bad.

Is there a reason you chose the high? Median or Mean might lead to a subtler gradient in the blanket. You could have a difference of 5-10 degrees (Celsius) each day bouncing back and forth sometimes depending on rain and clouds. Is it standard for temperature blankets to use the high?

The highs are just easier to keep up with and i dont feel like finding the median everyday. My partner put all of the temps with the temp gauge we are using into excel and it still has a pretty nice gradient using the highs from 2023 when we zoom out and look at the whole sheet.

Not sure where you live or how locally you want the data, but often government has historical daily records available online.

For an example from Canada where I am They provide daily records as well as hourly records which give a high, low, and average as well as other data which can be downloaded into csv format for excel.

At least could be used as a backup if your own gauge malfunctions or gets forgotten / left for holidays or something.

Best guess is a blanket with one line? Per day based on average temperature VS normal. But I’m a stranger to the community so that’s just a guess

Good guess! You can base it on the average, high, or low. My partner and I decided to do the highs. Ive also seen people do emotion blankets correlating the colors to how they felt each day for a year, its a fun concept with a randomized out come.

OP, good luck!. Your color choices look great! This turned into a several year commitment for me. I’m 30 rows away from finishing my 2021 blanket. So much tendonitis. I used Lion Brand Hometown yarn. Color code:

    102+ Red Tampa Spice

    96-101 Syracuse Orange

    90-95 Madison Mustard

    84-89 Houston Cream

    76-83 Oklahoma city Green

    69-75 Key Largo Tweed

    60-68 Washington Denim

59 and below San Diego Blue

    (Sorry about formatting)

I made a spreadsheet of previous years temperatures and played with the color ranges in hopes I would end up with interesting color variations.

Knit 112 times each row :) i know it’s not technically crochet but ive been working on this beast for years and really wanted to share.

I’ve crocheted plenty but my wrist can no longer tolerate any significant project.

I have to upload my photos to a free image hosting site then screenshot them there to share here since my phone camera is too high res to upload here. Hope you get it finished without too much pain!

I hope you meant 2024 unless your blanket is actually a napkin. (or if you’re a hamster, I’m sorry in that case).

I like the idea! I was thinking of doing a cross stitch like that…

if only it wouldn’t trigger my climate anxiety. It’s enough that we have late March temps at the end of December. I literally keep my windows open at home during the day.
