Lpt: boil water at night before bed, so you can use it to melt the ice off the windshield. Just pop it in the freezer to keep it until morning.
Whenever we get a ice storm, I like to break out the blowtorch. If you use a little-known solvent called Gas-o-line to loosen the ice, it makes quick work.

I find a ball-peen hammer to chip the ice away works great
