It was banned but copies still went around North America (not sure about other continents),Pre internet days at that. Definitely qualifies as cult classic in that regard. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

The first viewing was full of shock value.
After that it was not my cup of tea. Repulsive on many levels.

There was another one also, traces of death, from what I remember it was even worse
