I remember watching it in the nineties, didn’t know it was a cult classic, we just watched for the gore, but I couldn’t pass the first couple of minutes lol
It was banned but copies still went around North America (not sure about other continents),Pre internet days at that. Definitely qualifies as cult classic in that regard. Word of mouth is a powerful thing.

Ok, just for the record, I’ve watched in Brazil and got it from my local movie rental.
There was another one also, traces of death, from what I remember it was even worse
