I’m usually pretty good at being able to follow multiple threads of events at once, and even I’m getting overwhelmed. I’ve had to step away from the news somewhat, simply because I know there’s only so much I can do at this point. Trump, Elon, and their minions are going on their romp around the federal government and the best anyone else can do is throw a few lawsuits at them.

The violent protests didn’t do shit either, they just pissed off the rest of the citizenship. When protests turn to violence, all too often it’s against the businesses that the peasants frequent.
I saw signs around Portland for a January 21 protest. From what I’ve heard, it was a lot smaller than what Portland saw in 2017. It’s hard to read the tea leaves on why that is.

The Obama administration was having trouble working with the Republicans because the Tea Party movement had gotten a lot of firebrands elected where working together with Democrats to effectively govern was unthinkable. The Republican House leadership since then has been weak, which has led to multiple government shutdowns.

Same with many of the abuses that we’ve seen caught on camera recently. There are some problems with videos that lack context, but authorities can’t just act with impunity in their face and expect to not have a camera in their face.

In that vein, revolutions have as much of a chance to end poorly as to end well. Look at what is happening in Syria right now. There are a lot of players. The ideal arrangement would be peaceful power sharing inside of a democratic framework, but there is every chance that Assad will be replaced with another violent authoritarian regime.
Same at least for my union in the US. I haven’t needed it, but it’s there for the people who do. Most of the benefits like dental have better coverage through my employer, but I am sure it is more relevant for other bargaining units that they work with.
I am visiting Boston. I am looking forward to using their transit, but their biking has not left a good impression so far. In one spot, they had a bike lane symbol, but it was just on a busy street between parking and traffic with no actual lane. In another spot, there was an actual lane, but people were parking on it. And just in general, there aren’t a lot of obvious places to bike around. People are making it work, but it just looks dangerous.
No, but people are suggesting giving his murderer a free pass because they don’t like him aka he is unpopular. There’s a good reason that he’s unpopular, just like there’s a good reason that many widely detested people are unpopular. It doesn’t mean we start being a lawless nation.
Even after hearing how much of a total POS shit the CEO is, yes. That’s just a basic part of the rule of law. You murder someone, you get prosecuted. It’s a really dangerous path for a society when it’s open season to outright murder people when they’re unpopular.
From some searching, they’re also available for charter. Still not something for a person of average means to do on their own, but maybe a group of upper-middle class people. Some Amtrak routes go through some incredibly scenic areas. The one that comes to mind in my neck of the woods is the Empire Builder. It would be a luxury experience for sure.
