  • My experience is not vast, but I’ve seen a lot more use of Power BI in companies than Tableau in recent years. I think Power BI is a frequent choice because of how mainstream it is. Most companies already have an existing license agreement with Microsoft for windows and office, so there’s a low barrier for entry if they need some general purpose analytics and reporting. This is also a vibe thing in part, as there’s a familiarity and comfort level already in place with M$, whereas Tableau can be a bit of an unknown for many.

I don’t think you’d regret either, but from a job search perspective I think you might fit with more companies with Power BI.

    Good luck with your search!

Albertan here, and thank you for highlighting our cartoonish provincial government at the moment. Securing conservative governments in Alberta is never that hard, but this bunch did so with little more than shit-talking the Trudeau government, half-hearted identity politics, and batshit conspiracy theories. Very low bar.

I think the pending federal election will be a fair indicator of how much right-wing bullshit we’ve had enough of, both in Canada overall and in Alberta specifically. Trump’s full-court press into authoritarianism has been an obvious game-changer in Canada, and I think most appreciate that the stakes are much higher this time around. Flirting with the neo-nazis on the right will no longer be an option for folks like PP and DS - they have to either go all-in with Trump or make a clean break to stand a chance with most folks this time around.

Unfortunately in Alberta, there won’t be an election call until 2027, so while I would love to “expel Danielle Smith and her ilk”, short of torches and pitchforks, we will have to keep building support and bide our time.

  • While fentanyl is deadly serious, the “crisis” of it flowing over the US border is the made-up emergency on which Trump bases his legitimate authority to levy these tariffs. Without an emergency he would have no legal basis to fuck around like this without violating our trade agreements (which he signed last time around), so it’s part of the narrative, regardless of any amount of truth to it.

The “crisis” will end only when they determine it is no longer useful to pursue these tactics and switch to some other type of fuckery. It’s just as likely that he will declare them resolved as a face-saving measure so he can stop the bleeding at home. Art of the deal!

  • I was looking at Proton for mail and calendar right around the time the Andy thing kicked off. I hadn’t yet pulled the trigger on Proton due to their fairly high pricing. I ultimately decided on Tuta for mail and calendar, and I have no issues using their native/desktop apps. I am still forwarding everything from my Gmail account as I slowly work through changing my email on key services. So far so good.

The one issue I had with Tuta is no ability to import mail unless you are at the highest priced tier. I’m on the middle one so no import. What I did instead was just download a copy of my Gmail to an MBOX file, and I have that on my desktop and access it with Thunderbird (read only) as needed. This was fine for me as I don’t have much mail of significance.

Switching was a small action, but one that made me feel immediately better, like I did something concrete in opposition to the rapidly enshittifying tech universe.
