Hyperion by Dan Simmons. A very imaginative book. Which could be considered a backhanded compliment. I dont think he always gets it right but on the balance it’s an engaging read. Best of all its a trilogy so more books to go. Hopefully the quality keeps up.

Flip-flopping on states rights is conservative bread and butter. When conservatives control the federal government there is no such thing as state rights and when they don’t it’s federal overreach. This endless news cycle with these talking heads ceaselessly babbling is normalizing that words don’t actually matter. Politicians will say the exact opposite thing with equal conviction.
Yes, I heard that but I think that there is almost always somewhere to move. My guess is that the police thought she didn’t make that effort. Probably the police didn’t make it very clear what they wanted before the escalated.
I’m a little confused. Lots of words before it seems like she was pulled over because she didn’t get out of the way of the police when they put their sirens on. Impossible to know whether she made a mistake or not. Still probably a massive overreaction by the police. Obviously traumatic for the young woman but her narrative seems melodramatic. Yes, you’re in the bike lane but you can still move over. It does seem dystopia that you can be arrested for not having ID for such a small offense.
I set it up a while ago and don’t have a good resource for setting it up now. Once I got it set up it has worked well. But like I said it seems fragile. When I upgraded fedora a couple of years ago it broke. I think it might have been the wayland transition. I switched from Nvidia to AMD. But I’m not sure that’s necessary. My wife and I have two workstations on one computer. It works well until it breaks (if you want to live with end of life software it may not break). For whatever reason multiseat doesn’t seem to be a mainstream feature. But I like it and have been using it for many years.

Loginctl is the tool you use to assign hardware to different seats. Also I’m not sure every login manager supports it. I used GDM.
The open source community feels like the ultimate right to repair environment. You’re right, it feels very empowering and fulfilling. Totally opposite of the frustration of dealing with often intentionally unrepairable products.
The older I get the more I favor unions because they seem to support the idea of seniority. However, assigning benefits based on seniority doesn’t seem like a very effective solution for a well functioning system. Gotta hand it to the Republicans. My sample size of myself has had 1 drive fail in decades. It was a solid state drive. Thankfully it failed in a strangely intermittent way and I was able to recover the data. But still, it surprised me as one would assume solid state would be more reliable. That spinning rust has proven to be very reliable. But regardless I’m sure SSD will be/are better in every way.
You got the right idea I think. The boats are all smooshed together in a Marina so it’s natural for people to overestimate the number of boats relative to the number of people. There are way way way more people then there are boats. Honestly that’s the appeal of boats, the ability to go somewhere there aren’t a lot of people because most people don’t own boats.
