  • We went through my Great Aunt’s old photo album with her a few years before she passed at 101(!) We recorded the audio and scanned the whole photo album, so we now basically have a whole slideshow narrated by her going through her old photos. She was the last person in our family from her generation and there were people and places in that photo album that no one else would have been able to identify. At her memorial service, my brother took the raw material and edited together a five minute video presentation that included music, photos and her voice narrating. It was great at the service for everyone to have that contact with her voice again.

Both my father and my mother (divorced) have old 8mm film which I’ve recently digitized, and we’re now in the process of sitting down with them and informally recording their voiceovers with the old footage so we have a record of everyone and every place in the old footage.

We’ve also gotten subscriptions for my mother, father, and father-in-law to a service called storyworth that sends them a question a week via email and gives them a web form to answer the question in. They can also do more than one a week, select a different question if they don’t want to do the one they were sent, or make up their own question. At the end of a year, storyworth collects it all together and prints a book of all the generated material. Photos can also be added. It’s gone well, though their consistency has varied a bit. We’ve renewed all of their subscriptions for another year and we’re getting some great stories out of it.

I’m grandfathered in to when their premium was a one-time payment, but I’m trying out AntennaPod again as I’d like to stick with open source solutions. I haven’t used AntennaPod since 2.4.x and I moved back to Pocket Cast because AntennaPod was giving me a weird issue where the app would occasionally lose audio focus when I paused. I’m hoping I don’t run into that issue again, because, other than that, it was every bit as good as Pocket Casts, probably better.

I love being able to arrange by tags, rather than folders.

Based on Behind The Bastards, check out Knowledge Fight. Dan and Jordan have co-hosted on BtB. They track Alex Jones and Infowars. They’re funny and delightful.

Based on Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me, check out The Unbelievable Truth. Hosted by David Mitchell on BBC Radio 4. Very funny celebrity panel show where they tell outrageous lies about a particular topic, but try to snuggle truths undetected past their opponents. Very funny, and there’s years of back catalog to listen to, if you’re so inclined.

I couldn’t resist. I went ahead and bought that AL13 aggressive after reading and watching a bunch of reviews. It’s great. It holds the blade more firmly than the Merkur and shaves really smoothly without pulling. I would like it if it were a bit heavier, but it still feels good in my hand. Thank you for the recommendation.

My Merkur 23C has served me well for 13 years. Recently the threaded screw broke off and I had to get a replacement head. But it was very reasonable. I have been curious about the Hensons, but have tended to stick with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy. People really seem to like them though. Do you have the light, medium, or aggressive?

Nah. It takes a little more awareness while you’re shaving for sure, but you’re rarely if ever going to cut yourself once you get your gear and technique dialed in. For me, I had to find the right blade. I found Feather brand blades, which a lot of people recommend, didn’t work well with my skin, but Astra blades are great for me. Everyone’s a little different.

I got a can of chicken broth, knocked a slot into the top with a flathead screwdriver and a hammer, poured out the stock and rinsed and dried the can. It lives in the cabinet beneath my sink and I drop my blades in it when I’m done with them. That was about 10 years ago. The thing is maybe a third full.
