Was libertarian in college. Realized that a key facet of libertarian thinking involves the ideas that “government is a necessary evil” and that “government exists to keep one person’s freedoms from infringing on another’s.” Which led me to consider that if it’s a necessary evil then government should work for the majority of people. Further, government’s “umpire” role should apply to the rich since their freedoms are often infringing on mine and others’ (and wealth is a form of power that needs its own checks).

Anyway, I think I lean more toward communitarian politics nowadays.

  • Used to paint garage floors for new construction in the early ‘00s and can absolutely concur with this assessment. Supposedly “concrete” columns nothing more than PVC pipe sprayed with a layer of cement and then stucco for texture; “crushed coral” window frames just high density foam sprayed to look like coral. These were homes being marketed as luxury but built exactly like the cheap apartments that were also popping up everywhere. Foundations are now cracking, exteriors peeling away and revealing extensive mildew…

  • I’d say for 3 either Shin Godzilla or Godzilla -1.0 as both are films that deal with a group of people coming together from disparate backgrounds in order to address a common threat. Shin is more political satire and -1.0 is a post-WW2 period drama (assuming you’ve seen neither and are not a massive Godzilla nerd like I am—but seriously they are excellent films in their own rights). Also The Martian is good for this too.

Avatar Way of Water is a great film about family, as is Mitchells Vs. The Machines. Both address feelings of being misunderstood by family members and coming together.

I can probably think of others…
