Under the proposed standards, companies would have to pay workers 120 per cent of the province’s minimum wage, not including tips, from the time they accept a ride-hailing or delivery assignment through its completion.

The rate is higher than B.C.’s minimum wage – currently set at $16.75 – because it would not apply to the time spent waiting between assignments, according to the Ministry of Labour.

I’m old enough to remember the prior NDP government and the fast ferry debacle but goddamned if this one isn’t doing some pretty decent stuff. Of course there’s more I wish they’d do but hell, it feels like the most progressive provincial government we’ve had in decades.

I’m a similar age, haha. Keep in mind, this is the most progressive government we’ve had in 17~ years, so the ‘decades’ comment is almost spot on :) We had the awful BC Liberals from 2001 till 2017, and yes, it sure feels nice, doesn’t it? Not perfect, that’s for sure, but such a breath of fresh air after a long time of Con government.

Absolutely a breath of fresh air. It’s not like I hated absolutely everything the BC Liberals did but these days, more often than not when I read about something the provincial government is doing I’m thinking “yeah, that seems like a decent idea.” I just can’t imagine the BC Liberals taking on AirBnB, looking out for gig workers etc. And so much stuff for low income folks! Admittedly, I’m a little jealous some of those supports weren’t around when I was a low income earner but still, nice to see it for others.

Unrelated, but does your username have a backstory? It feels sci-fi-ish which I usually can at least place or know what show I’m ignorant of, but for yours I’m at a total loss.

While they weren’t foaming-at-the-mouth baby-eaters or anything, but some highlights include - The long, drawn out fight with the BC Teachers Federation that screwed over kids, and that the BC Liberals lost in court; the ‘we totally aren’t going to do it, oops’ of the HST; and the coup-de-grace, the cost of housing - up 130% during their reign; and to add to the previous one, during that same time, real B.C. earnings declined.

So housing got this bad, and schooling - they closed 200 schools during their reign! It’s crazy to look back on.

Haha, as to my name, it’s only a personal backstory. TSG was the first gaming ‘clan’ I was in as a teenager, and Asmodeus was mentioned in the shareware version of Quake. (The logo is from Marathon, another game from the 90’s. Damn, that makes me feel old…)

“Totally not doing it oops the HST”, which when they rolled it back:

            • they did in a spiteful way ensuring we’d owe a penalty (look what you made us do)
            • They did not ACTUALLY roll it back for stuff like private used auto sales (which now owe both taxes unlike before HST).

Also, while stuff like “Fast Ferries” was dumb AF, things like the sale of provincial railways should have damn well been criminal.

I wasn’t old enough to be paying attention at the time, but in hindsight it really looks like the Liberals sold off the fast cats at such a low price to make them look like even more of a failure than they were.

Wow, that was a depressing walk down memory lane. (Except for the shareware games. God I miss those weird 1 level demos. Almost bought Jazz Jackrabbit the other month just to see what the other levels were actually like.)

I think watching American politics, my standards of poor government have dropped significantly. Good to be reminded.

Also, thanks for sharing the name backstory. I’m relieved I don’t have to surrender too much of my nerd cred.
