Do teams not use the same 11 players on field goal blocks for every play?
I can understand how you get 12 players on defense because someone was confused about what package you’re running, but if you’re the 12th guy on special teams shouldn’t you stop and think “Hey, I’m not usually out here for these plays, maybe I’m an extra?”

I could have sworn that the D gets time to sub out if the O does but apparently that rule is not enforced after the 2 min warning of either half (Rule 5-2-10): Note: The quick-snap rule does not apply after the two-minute warning of either half, or if there is not a substitution by the offense.

Maybe someone was injured for the previous FG and you’re in. Then this guy returns and you don’t know. Lots of things could have happened. Getting 11 men on the field for teams is frigging hard, I’m telling you. With that being said, this is the NFL, and they have all the resources available and get paid big bucks. Shouldn’t happen.
Had this happen to me 2 times while I still played, came in on Punt Returns for some other guy and was the odd one out since that dude returned. My coach noticed both times and got me off quick enough however lol
They had 5 defensive starters out. And some other substitutions during the game. It’s not as cut and dried as you think.
Darius Butler said on PMS that there are like 4 fg teams, base, nickel, dime were 3 that he stated. On fast change kicks the personnel is based on minimum subs to line up correctly. There was clearly a miscue on what group needed to be on the field
No, it isn’t always the same people because of injuries. But, there is a person that will count how many people are on the field during the huddle. Since it was a rushed field goal and no huddle, they didn’t count. With that said, the coaches knew what was coming, and should have had the right people ready. The Broncos did.
That’s what I was wondering, things got hectic and someone lost the count.
One of my favorites back in the day (trying to find video) Antonio Pierce counting 12 and pushing one of his guys offside to get the play killed.
I’m trying to understand this but can you explain it? Isn’t the penalty for both the same? (5 yards). Why is offsides better than too many men on field? Thanks
Ah, ok found someone else explaining it and I screwed it up.
Pierce saw he only had 10 on defense (playing a man down) so he ran up and got the infraction (giving 5 to get his man on the field).
The only reason I could see for doing it with 12 on the field would be to just not risk a free play (because you’re right it’s 5 either way).

I did it 3 Times in my freshman yr of high school. 3 games in row. We woulda won state if coach would have put me back in.

Blame McDermott. He had a timeout to talk it over and get it set. It was obvious that the Broncos might do another quick change.

Yea. Realistically they shouldn’t have subbed out at all and used the same 11 players for both plays
I meant that they’d had plenty of time before the penultimate play to discuss
Team makes decision for regular defense to stay on the field >>> ST coordinator changes mind and sends out the field goal blocking unit >>> this doesn’t get communicated to or gets missed by 1 guy, who incidentally hasn’t played a down of football in some time.

Omg… THAT plus… the other time has uno reverse timeouts themselves too! The superbowl could end up being an hour longer with 30 people on both sides! Think of the "we’ll just eat this call game 3 for power ups in the play offs. Like… shut up and take my money, where do I sign?

The 12th guy probably wrongly assumed they were just gonna play defense, which arguably they should have.
Why don’t teams just have a set play design when opposing teams try to run into FG formation? Just line up and let them kick, it’s not like it matters anyways
