    very nice!

we had a long weekend, with a stay out in gimli thursday evening, followed by my son’s 11U baseball playoffs this weekend. Started with a loss on Friday night, two wins on Saturday, then a tough loss to a tough team for their final game today. It was a lot of fun, our first year of “real” baseball, with keeping score and kids pitching, etc.

Nice! I play slo pitch, but I never played any organized ball as a kid. I don’t know it it’s more fun or more stressful. ;)

At least with slo pitch, you basically resign yourself to being a .500 team forever. Unless you’re the best team in the top division, or the worst team in the lowest division, you will always be moving up or down until you settle in at about .500. Once you realize that, you effectively stop caring about winning or losing and instead focus on “did I play well personally today?” or “I got to hang out with the team and drink beers in the sun.” I suspect this level of relaxed sport doesn’t exist for children. It didn’t when I played hockey as a child.

      What’s it like these days?

It probably depends the league and coaching. I mean they are still learning, and our team had a number of first timers, so our coaches was more focused on learning and having fun rather than winning.

the playoffs were a little more competitive, where we tried to play our best players at their best positions, but still tried to give everyone involved.

some other teams were much more competitive, once bringing a young ump to tears because they didn’t like their calls, etc. I’m sure it will only get worse the older they get. sighs

I reffed hockey as a teenager. It gets worse. Had to call the cops after a game so I could leave my changing room.

            oof. that sucks.

I know the team/parents that did that got a talking to, and I’m not sure what would have happened if it continued, but at least there’s some measures to curb it a little bit.

they have a hard enough time finding umps it would suck if they couldn’t play because no one wanted to do that.
