I understand the concerns around uncertainty, but the calls around censorship seems far fetched here.
We’ve been doing this since the inception of the country. It’s called taxes. The government is levying a tax on media companies to reinvest in Canadian content. We’ve always had this ‘tax’ on traditional broadcasting, which is easier to regulate through frequency auctions and licenses.
Moving forward in good faith, this is a win for our country and content producers.
Even if we humor the conspiracy theories, you can vote with your conscience to make this a balanced and fair regulation.
This not “a win for our country” and it isn’t a “freedom of speech violation” either. Nothing so dramatic. It’s just another ridiculous, elaborate, useless, expensive, bureaucratic scheme the likes of which only the CRTC is capable of managing.
Fuck the CRTC and Bell/Rogers/Cogeco who run them. The next step will be to deem the use of VPNs or other encrypted tunneling software illegal. We really are the dumbest western country.
edit: apparently I was unclear. Registering all these platforms is a precursor to charging them more money to provide media to Canadians, many platforms will dump Canada when there is 10x the market in the US with none of the CRTC. The only way to access these platforms will be VPNs and tunnels.
I fail to see how charging Canadian customers a little more to cover any additional costs would push companies out of Canada.
This sort of program historically also helps grow local content which is a net benefit to Canadians.
I certainly don’t know all the details, but looking at the influence of Canadian media and the types of media we regularly successfully export it’s hard to say it hasn’t historically worked well for us.
It’s one of those laws that only authoritarian regimes put in place and the fact that this is happening in Canada is mindblowing and utterly disappointing.
You might need to check your news sources if you’re linking regulation to authoritirian… I’m not aware of a single advanced economy that doesn’t regulate their industries.
Perhaps you didn’t notice that I said it’s one of those laws that you expect to see in counties run by authoritarian regimes like Russia, Iran, or China. This can easily lead to freedom of speech violations and censorships. It is dangerous and governments must not get a free pass to put such rules in place.
Say “I’ve swallowed American right wing media without thought” without using those words.
Also say “I’ve never lived in an authoritarian nation before” without using those words.
