When I started my first real engineering job in the early '80s, there were trans people there. And gay people. Oh, and autistic people, although we didn’t know the term, and just thought they were weird. It was definitely a pretty conservative environment, yet no one had a real problem with any of it. It’s sad to see how that has changed.
Labels made it noticeable and let cruel people point to something definably different.
