It’s a great start but it doesn’t go nearly far enough. Their upzoning is really minimal with the amount of R1 zones land, not to mention the fact that Hammond Bay is completely left off the plan. Can’t afford to up the density to the rich neighbourhoods or something?
Can’t afford to up the density to the rich neighbourhoods or something?
That is where NIMBYs will most feverishly oppose it
Which is exactly why it should be targeted. I feel so bad for all the kids living up there who have to rely on a car ride to get anywhere, not to mention the poor uni kids who get tricked into living up there without realizing how terrible our bus system is.
I live in the north end my first year at viu and bought a car after 2 months of trying to manage the bus schedule while working. Several of the exchange students my aunts had over the last ten years in the north end have left her place a couple months in because of how terrible the services are. Coming from countries like Germany, Korea, etc where they have amazing transit and bike infrastructure in cities smaller than Nanaimo really outlined to them how terrible this place is if you can’t afford a car. Want to go downtown on a Friday night, better make sure you can afford the $60+ cab ride home from level two.
yeah, there’s more cardboard boxes available under bridges than Nanaimo has ever seen
