In August, officials voted unanimously to approve the settlement. Lashawn Thompson, 35, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Fulton County Jail on September 13, 2022. Due to several mental health issues, Thompson was housed in the prison’s psychiatric ward for three months. He was charged with simple assault against police officers.
Photos of Thompson covered in insect bites and images of his filthy cell went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and sparking the hashtag #Justice4Lashawn.
My strong suspicion is that “He was charged with simple assault against police officers” is why Mr Thompson was neglected and left to die in the jail.
The American legal system, founded on the concept that crimes against an individual are crimes against the state, carried out the reasoned sentence of being eaten to death by bugs upon Lashawn Thompson for spitting on a police officer, one of fifteen inmates at Fulton County Jail who, shockingly, and for no reason law enforcement or prison officials can pinpoint, died in Fulton county jail in 2022.
