Has anyone made custom themes for PieFed? Is it even possible in the first place?
Has anyone made custom themes for PieFed?
I realized I didn’t really answer this portion of your question. The answer is yes. In my memory, both the amethyst theme as well as the hlt-fruits theme were developed by other users/admins and were then later incorporated into the codebase. rimu would know better if the other themes in piefed were made in this way.
To create a fully-featured theme that is selectable in the dropdown, you would need to open a pull request and get it incorporated into the codebase. Or, if you are on an instance other than piefed.social, convince your local admin to incorporate your theme into their code.
However, most of the themes you see in piefed are pretty much just a css file that overwrites the default (here is the one for the amethyst theme as an example). AFAIK, only the dillo theme really uses a lot of alternate template files, but that is due to a lot of limitations present in the dillo browser which that theme was designed for.
So, you could pretty much define a new theme using your custom css in the user settings. The only issue might be that some css selectors don’t work in the custom css field. Specifically, using the
css selection operator doesn’t work (there are probably others too). So, you might run into some roadblocks if you try to get too fancy.I see, thanks for the info. I was thinking of inserting a custom theme into the user setting custom css for personal use. I’m not confident enough to have others use it as well too lol
Yes the custom css field in your profile will be much easier than doing a full theme.
For anyone reading this and thinking about making a theme - how the theme system works in PieFed is described in this blog post - https://join.piefed.social/2024/02/07/changing-piefeds-appearance-with-themes/. It’s really simple if you already know how to use git and codeberg.
It’s not an “official” theme but I was playing around with a Hot Dog Stand inspired theme because I was bored.

I am just now realizing there are themes available with piefed. :)
From what I see in my Settings screen, there are about ten themes to choose from now, but the list doesn’t seem to be expandable. Maybe you can get someone who actually knows how piefed works to answer you though.
