The 13-year-old from White Rock, B.C., is the video game developer behind the highly anticipated “Astrolander,” an action-adventure, co-operative game that is set to release exclusively on PlayStation 5.
Trest said he first learned how to code at the ripe age of six, after gaining an interest in video games through his father. After a few years of developing his own animations through free video game development programs, he decided to create his own independent video game studio, which he called Lost Cartridge Creations.
He’s the sole video game developer of his company, but says he gets occasional help from his father.
“I want to say around six or seven (years old) is when I really started getting into coding. My dad definitely got me interested but I really wanted to keep learning and working on new projects, so it’s really expanded beyond that now,” Trest told CTVNews.ca in a video interview on Tuesday.
The entire news article sounds like it’s from someone who hasn’t seen a video game in the last 20 years.
What makes the game so special, Trest says, is the immersive features through the video game controller, which allow players to feel the vibrations of the action. This technology, known as haptic feedback, is what’s behind the realistic sensations felt while playing the game, Trest explained.
What? Even the N64 had a rumble pack back in the day.
And “taking the video game industry by storm”? The announcement trailer has 3.4k views. Reddit posts about the game have 1 and 3 upvotes. This feels like a marketing campaign from the dad.
Though I’m surprised PlayStation picked this up (but maybe it’s just self-published?).
It reminds me of some kind of weird hybrid between the lunar lander sim and nes mario water world hell, all done up with a 3d envirment but still a side scroller.
My first thought was that it was some kind of higher quality remake of the AstroLander mini game from TimeSplitters 2.
There’s also apparently an itch.io game called Astrolander by astrofra released in 2016.
You also would expect, that this guy already published something, so people are now looking forward to his new game. Why should I be hyped about a game by a 13-year old? I mean, it sure is impressive, but it doesn’t look like a really fun game.
This kid very well might be an actual super genius rockstar coder, but there are so many of these articles being published all the time and it’s almost always a fluff piece involving the parents doing the work.
