So you’re telling me that they run on such a skeleton crew that ONE employee having an accident and missing work led to 12 sailings being cancelled?
I really think it’s time to accept that BC Ferries should be run as a public service and not as a for profit business.
It’s almost like somewhere around 2004… something changed :-P
BC Ferries was operating at a loss between 1960 and 2004… but it was a government corporation and didn’t really “need” to run at a profit. As soon as it was privatized and that American CEO stepped in, things started going wrong.
Now it’s a complete shit show. The working conditions and contracts that the staff are employed under are insane. Yeah, they can’t find employees… not much wonder.
Essential service … absolutely no effective Business Continuity Plan. No safety margin.
If you picked Public Private Partnership, you’d be right.
But wait! What about 2022’s Bill 7 in the ledge? It was a bill to bring BCFerries back under firmer government oversight. Go see what happened to it. Thanks David!
