Trump drew a question about the profanity he used a day earlier to chastise both Israel and Iran for violating a recently brokered ceasefire, and his comparing them to unruly children. “They’ve had a big fight, like two kids in a school yard. They fight like hell, you can’t stop them. Let them fight for about two, three minutes, then it’s easier to stop them,” Trump said in a press appearance alongside Rutte, echoing language he has used to describe Ukraine and Russia.

Rutte took the fighting kids analogy a bit further: “Daddy has to sometimes use strong language.”

Does anyone ever actually read the article?

The NATO partners are doing everything they can to stroke the ego of the felon the USA chose as their president, because they have no choice.

Still, if true, when Trump leaves office all of these people must declare that all of this shit they did and said were lies and quit themselves.

If they really do not mean that the US daddy Trump attacking Iran is keeping us safe, and shit like that, then they need to say that at some point, and that is as soon as possible. That would be when Trumps leaves office, if that was indeed the purpose here; to stroke his ego. And if they do, they need to quit, bebause they lied and distorted reality for all of us.

And I don’t think they will. They will instead still defend this shit long after he is gone and with it: another step forward for far-right populism and their view.

It’s just a strategy for dealing with an ego in need of constant external reinforcement and validation. Absolutely embarrassing but it probably works.

Ignoring them as best as possible and push back if they step over lines. Then go back to ignoring them.

Very sadly, Rutte is not anywhere near a position to ignore Trump. And pushing back currently comes with a much higher risk than sucking up. I think Rutte is playing a short term game because in the long term Trump is too unpredictable anyway. I think Rutte just wants to make sure that Trump leaves this meeting feeling that “NATO likes Donald, NATO good” so that he doesn’t do anything drastic. Tomorrow he will probably focus on something different anyway. Golf, tariffs, Canada, Biden - who knows?
