I have skin in this game

I regularly travel to the US to see my woman. We’re working on her visa to get her out of the shithole that is the US, but it’s a process, and it’s not quick

I’m lucky enough that I fly into a place where people just go to have a good time. I simply say “I’m here to let my hair down” when I fly in. The last customs officer couldn’t have cared less if he’d tried

I have no Facebook, no Twitter, no instagram, LinkedIn or anything like that

If you google me, nothing whatsoever comes up

But I’m never complacent or a dick, no matter how things may be going at the airport. Always smiling and disarming, giving nobody any reason to take their bad day out on me

I’ve been through this process of having a partner in another country and waiting forever for visas et cetera.

I met her 12 years ago and she got her citizenship last year.

It’s a pretty awful process and you have my sympathies.

I’m in the US and my daughter’s boyfriend is in London. He has visited a few times and they grill him for awhile, but they let him in. They have done this in the past though too. Sme friends and I were searched and questioned for several hours just coming back from Canada one time, and we were all citizens. That was in the '90s.

The warning they’re providing is that devices and social might be searched. I think that’s a pretty sensible warning with things as they are.

Border searches have always been a thing, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that travellers are being grilled more in the last 100 days.

It’s different if there’s a spouse you need to visit in the US.

The US has never been an interesting destination for me, but if I were planning a holiday there just for fun I would definitely look at other destinations for the time being.

        Thanks,

        That means a lot

We’re getting there. We’re waiting on a couple of things to fall into place, but it’s going to happen

We can get her here, then start work on the path to citizenship

It’s going to take a little time, and some work, but she’s worth it

Yeah. People who’ve not been through it just don’t realise what it’s like.

For us it was quite uncertain that she’d get permanent residency. It’s so bizarre to have a government department rule on such a huge part of your life and your future, and have no way to influence the outcome. It was stressful.

I kinda bear the emotional scars. Dutton was the Border Force Minister at the time we were going through that. God I hated him so bad and have done so ever since. I was so stoked last week to see that he will never be PM. Fuck you Dutt plug. I hope I never see your face again.

I genuinely enjoyed watching him fail

He looked lost and hurt, and I damned near got a stiffy

I’m an immigrant. I’ve contributed a huge amount to Australia, but my anger towards him wasn’t on behalf of myself, but of the people he shat on purely because he likes to hurt people in order to feel strong

When a Queensland cop is hated by other Queensland cops, it’s damning

Oh, and the blatant corruption. Somehow he’s a multi-millionaire without anything fishy…

I just heard on the betoota advocate podcast that Dutton is in phuket at a thai boxing retreat.

I’m going to spend the next few days imagining him listening to eye of the tiger and punching a bag with Albo’s photo stuck to it.

I think I mentioned my partner is Thai. Love watching thai fighters. Their lean muscle is just amazing. There’s not much I wouldn’t give to watch a 50kg Thai harpy give Dutton a black eye.

Yeah my daughter and her boyfriend want to get married but there’s really not a path for them to be able to live together. She can’t work there, he can’t work here. Any advice?

            I wish I had some

It sounds like an incredibly difficult situation

I’d talk to an immigration agent before anything else

There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and people ask social media sites rather than professionals

They’ve consulted and received no real help. I don’t live near a border, so the best help you get from a professional is a short online chat or a phone call. People who have been through it are generally more helpful.

There may be a way forward, but it is unreasonable. Which is half the reason most legal immigrants are opposed to giving a pass to people who try to cut the line.

Given you’ve mentioned a border, may I assume that you and your daughter are not in Australia, but her beloved is?

As I mentioned in another comment in this thread my partner is a migrant. Our circumstances were somewhat unusual and I was told she wouldn’t be able to get permanent residency in Australia. Now 12 years on she’s an Australian citizen with two young kids born in Australia.

In my experience, travel agents in foreign countries are just “rain makers”. They just take your money and fill out the forms with no understanding or experience or strategy. If it rains they will take the credit but if your application is declined they just stop responding to your enquiries.

If your daughter’s significant other is Australian then he really needs to drive this process. Presumably he can earn AUD and as such can afford to pay an Australian migration agent to lay out the process. It’s not as simple as filling out the forms. Strategy is important - what visa to apply for, when to get married, what things to take photos of, et cetera.

If the guy is resistant to that process then… yeah.
