@Sunshine this is nothing new. I was detained at the border and questioned about my political views back during the Obama administration.

Don’t listen to the lazy slander of Hasan Piker, which is one of two types, either dismissing the incredibly dangerous precedent this sets because they don’t like his politics (which is a massive red flag about that person) or they try to slander him as some crazy radical.

Don’t listen to these people’s words at face value, decide for yourself, if you want to know about what happened listen to Hasan’s side before you jump on the lazy hate train other people are honking the horn for in this thread.

This has been happening for ages now with your average person, and now we’re supposed to care about how this happened to Hasan?

N.S. folk duo questioned about allegiance in U.S. traffic stop

At no point did I say I’m dismissing the precedent. The precedent was set months ago, and people are kidding themselves if they’re seeing Hasan as the first example of this.

All I’m going to say is how I’m sick of the fact that it takes the bad things to happen to a big name for Americans and people in general to give a shit, and while I do care about this happening to people in general, Hasan? Couldn’t care less.

checks notes yup says here under basic human decency that actually we are supposed to care about bad things happening to people even when we believe those bad things have happened in the past to other people, glad we cleared that confusion up :)

That’s not what I’m saying and you know you’re misconstruing what I’m saying here.

“Oh no, the economy’s in a downturn, thousands of people are losing their jobs, but let’s make an article about how that negatively affects Taylor Swift”

“New disease killing millions claims life of Ben Shapiro”

I’m not saying “this has happened to people before, suck it up buttercup”, I’m saying of all the people this is sadly happening to, this is the guy I care about the least. Replace Hasan with Alex Jones and tell me you’d give half a shit in comparison to anybody else facing this.

Yes, I would still be disturbed, but more importantly I would focus on raising people’s awareness of the pattern I had previously noted before I believed others had.

Even comparing Hasan to Alex Jones as if they are even remotely equatable is absurd though.

“in comparison to”, I’m not dismissing that this is still bad happening to Hasan.

And that wasn’t my point, I was using an over the top example to show where I’m coming from.

I dunno. I watch Vaush, I watch Hasan. I watch Sam Seder. Please don’t kill me but I watch some of PirateSoftware too (yes I know how much Lemmy hates him).

I’m not gonna defend their views, I can’t/won’t. I generally wanna hear their takes from their perspectives (as flawed as they could be).

I also don’t see that even if I disagree with their views that I’d want to say negative things about them being detained as I don’t think any of them have asked for it? Like, I’d be cheering if Joe Rogan got detained and bullied. The reason being he endorsed this type of stuff so it’s sweet watching someone get a taste of their own medicine.

lol, Twitch dude. Ex-Blizzard, Indie dev, ferret dude. You may know something about him even if you don’t think you do … his dad was the South Park WoW episode antagonist killing all those players. I think his dad was a cinematic dude and they liked him and put him in as that guy.

He’s made statements I’ve definitely disagreed with about preserving games and apparently questionable behaviour with playing WoW. There’s been a lot of controversy where he’s made a reply video with all the drama. I’m not gonna lie, I watched a few points and I didn’t really know or care about a lot of it so stopped a quarter of the way in.

I think anyone that doesn’t like him because of what he’s done is right to do so … I’ll just still catch him every now and again. I mean if I find out he supports genocide or the Trump admin I’ll change my mind.

I’m sorry, but he’s done more harm than good to how people view left-wing politics online.

This guy has trashed 9-5 job workers labeling their positions as being “easier” than being a streamer, all while he sits, talks, and leaves the room with the video running. He doesn’t edit his videos, other people do, and he’s on record refusing to pay them.

He decided to become a leading left-wing voice, and in being a massive hypocrite, has likely pushed people away from left-wing politics to be picked up by right-wing freaks who rightfully call him out. He’s on the record taking Russia’s side for invading Ukraine both in 2022 and 2014, has defended the Kai Cenat riot calling anybody who criticised him or the rioters racist, and many other such comments. I’m supposed to feel sorry for someone who likely contributed to people moving to the right, translating to more Republican votes, while under the guise as a left-wing figurehead? Yeah, no.

“O hey everyone it’s time to care about dead babies in Syria social media told me so.”

Go ahead and downvote me, just know you’re enabling those who push the Overton window to the right with their blatant hypocrisy.

Just for convenience sake, this should help clarify my thoughts more: https://lemmy.ca/post/43998271/16513594

Long story short, nobody should be detained like this, but this has been happening for months now and I care more about things overall than Hasan specifically.

It’d be like if the government started arresting smaller newscasters and Alex Jones got caught up in the mix. Overall would care about this happening to people, not Alex Jones specifically.

        (If you’re even left)

This just in, people need to accept hypocrisy rather than call it out in order to be seen as left-wing.

God man, people really think that not rooting out the bad apples is going to help left-wing politics. That’s how you end up with Jimmy Dore being an anti-vax pro-Trumper and Ana Kasparian being a transphobe.

I’m not even entirely sure why you have a vendetta against hasan, but okay let’s roll with that line of thinking.

Does this also mean that we should cancel Bernie Sanders for having Zionist takes at one point? Even when he has changed his stance and is infinitely better than most around him?

If only the right wingers were this divided, we might stand a chance.

This is a aspect inherent to the conservative vs progressive mind set. This is an extreme over simplification, like really extreme and doesn’t really apply to Trump, but here goes:

If your side wants things to stay the same, that’s it. You’re done formulating views.

But, if you want things to change, now you have to answer the question of what needs to change and how.

Continue going against Bernie. He still won’t call what’s happening in Palestine a genocide because he’s such a coward. Not that long ago he had pro-Palestine protestors removed from an event of his for unfurling the Palestinian flag, all this despite the crowd chanting “free Palestine”.

If you’re not calling it what it is, all you are is an enabler. I used to look up to the guy but his shameful unwillingness to use “the g word” only turns supporters away from him. Not calling it a genocide is a non-starter when every single fact points to that being the case. People aren’t blind, and this weakness from Bernie on this critical issue has made him lose countless supporters, of which who knows how many left politics altogether and stayed at home during the election as a result.

You either keep up the pressure, or find someone else willing to tell things as they are. If Bernie is so scared of stating facts on a human rights issue, then who’s to take his word that he’ll fight for anybody’s human rights if push truly comes to shove?

If Jamaal Bowman didn’t pull that damn fire alarm, he’d be a perfect example of someone (formerly) in office to look up to. In terms of commentators, been feeling homeless and left the U.S. sphere since Kyle Kulinski went radio silent in terms of a response to him saying it’s okay to deadname Caitlyn Jenner over her politics.

I agree to an extent, but regardless, editing 7-8 videos taking hours of work should be paid. That this wasn’t until he went to the community’s subreddit about it is ridiculous. Video editors doing work for you is something that should by default be seen as paid work, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone to do it voluntarily.

The guy shouldn’t have made the assumption he had an editor position in the bag and that this was a guarantee, but Hasan having received and published this work shouldn’t have assumed it to be free cause nobody does that. It’d be a completely different story if Hasan never published the edited vids.

It’s unique that the edit went up on a channel he controls.

People editing podcasts and streams and building unauthorized/unofficial channels is super common. I can see how that makes this even more murky, in a way where Hasan can be “huh? What? Whatever bro.” About it.

              Messy messy quasi-parasocial stuff.

Honestly? You make a good point.

Perhaps in regards to that I’ve misjudged him, but there’s still a number of things I think he’s said and done that have done more harm to left-wing politics in the states than good.

Not that it does anything, but I’ve gone ahead and downvoted myself on the initial comment. I don’t like deleting posts I’ve made, even if my mind has changed since making them.
