In a state where 18 is not old enough to drink, Edwards believes girls at 16 are old enough to get married. Edwards’ daughter, Elizabeth, served as a state representative, and Edwards said her service was the inspiration for his run for office. He is in his third term.

“… If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved, are we not, in fact, making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving couples?”

So I guess this is about wanting teenagers to get baby trapped

      freedom-loving couples

These fucking people really have a strange definition of the word “freedom”. It’s like they take any old thing and slap “freedom™ loving” onto it.

And all the other fucking weirdos that don’t know what basic words mean go “Ah yes! Freedom! I love freedom! Freedom to lock people up for political opinions. Freedom to dictate to others how they should live their lives. Freedom to force my religion onto others in schools. Freedom to coerce and trap little girls into marriage. And if you don’t agree with any of these things, it means you just hate freedom!”

OP, why are you posting this now? This is from March 2024, and it’s related to the (now dead) bill introduced effort by the New Hampshire GOP to reduce oppose raising the state’s marriage age below to 18. Even the post on /c/politics is that old.

Edit: I misremembered this event and wasn’t responsible enough to properly verify what I was saying. I’m really sorry.

It’s scary and gross how the same issue keeps coming back, frequently and in enough places that we can easily confuse one case for another.

Just yesterday I learned about Hardy Billington, a rep in Missouri. The topic article of the thread mentioned him being in favor of child marriage in April 2025, which made it confusing when I checked his Wikipedia page and saw that the only notable thing on it was when he endorced child marriage last year, in 2024. At first I thought it was about the recent bill, but no - this 70+ year old man really wants underage girls to be able to marry.

Point is, you can be forgiven for confusing similar events. The pedophiles are frickin’ everywhere. 😟

If a 16 year old child is old enough to make long term commitments like raising a child of their own and getting married…

Surely they’re old enough for something temporary with no long term effects like hormone blockers, right?

While not the common meaning when referring to the US, ‘State’ can also mean country. US states are called that based on an abandoned idea of them being highly independent of each other and the federal government.
