Decided to make a FAQ because many new users here ask the same questions.

Q: I subscribed to a community on another instance, why it is all empty here? / I clicked a link to a community, why I got 404?
A: This was answered here:
It will fetch the first 20 posts when the community is first searched from your instance (but no votes, comments etc). Once any local user subscribes to the community, all new posts/comments/votes etc will be delivered to your instance. Old items will only be fetched on demand (eg if you search them, or if they are referenced by a new item).
Old comments and posts in a remote community should start appearing after subscribing, and you can try speeding it up by putting their URLs into Sopuli’s search bar.
Q: Why I can’t see a community X from instance Y from here?
A: Put the community’s name into the search bar ([email protected]) or paste the whole URL there. Change the search’s type to Communities. The community should be found from search results.
Q: What kind of server is Sopuli running on?
A: Sopuli is running on Hetzner’s VPS located in Finland. The specs are a quad-core processor, 16 GB of RAM and over 120 GB of hard drive space.
Q: Do you accept donations?
A: Currently hosting Sopuli costs me ~30 € per month so it’s mere pocket change. For anyone interested in supporting, I set up a Patreon profile.
Q: Why was my registration rejected?
A: The application was blank (no need to write a mini essay) or you had an inappropriate username (something racist or like @[email protected])
Q: I subscribed a remote community, what does “subscription pending” mean?
A: Most likely the remote instance doesn’t respond or subscribing takes longer. Try to subscribe again.
Q: I registered but didn’t get the verification email. Can verification be done otherwise?

Q: Does Sopuli federate with Threads?
A: No.
Q: Does Sopuli allow bot accounts?
A: Whether a bot is allowed on Sopuli depends on the bot’s purpose on a case-by-case basis. A spammy and annoying bot is a no-no, same for a bot cross-posting from Reddit. Otherwise I say yes.

K: Tilasin toisella instanssilla olevan yhteisön, miksi se näyttää täällä tyhjältä? / Klikkasin linkkiä toisella instanssilla olevaan yhteisöön, miksi tuli 404?
V: Tähän on vastattu täällä:
20 ensimmäistä viestiä noudetaan kun yhteisöä haetaan instanssiltasi ensimmäistä kertaa (pl. kommentit, annetut äänet jne). Kun yksikin paikallinen käyttäjä tilaa yhteisön, kaikki uudet viestit/kommentit/äänet jne välitetään instanssillesi. Vanhemmat viestit noudetaan vain tarpeen mukaan (esim. kun haet niitä, tai uusi viesti viittaa niihin).
Toisaalla olevan yhteisön viestien ja kommenttien tulisi ilmestyä tilauksen jälkeen, ja voit yrittää nopeuttaa sitä laittamalla niiden URLit Sopulin hakupalkkiin.
K: Miksi yhteisö X instanssilta Y ei näy täällä?
V: Laita yhteisön nimi (yhteisö@domain.tld) hakupalkkiin tai laita koko URL sinne. Vaihda myös haun tyypiksi Yhteisöt. Yhteisön pitäisi löytyä hakutuloksista.
K: Millaisella palvelimella Sopuli pyörii?
V: Sopuli pyörii Hetznerin Suomessa sijaitsevalla virtuaalipalvelimella. Siinä on kolmiydinprosessori, 16 gigatavua keskusmuistia ja yli 120 gigatavua levytilaa.
K: Otatteko vastaan tukea?
V: Tällä hetkellä Sopulin pyörittäminen maksaa minulle ~30€/kk, mikä on pelkkää taskurahaa. Siitä huolimatta tein tuesta kiinnostuneille Patreon-profiilin.

K: Federoituuko Sopuli Threadsin kanssa?
V: Ei.
K: Salliitaanko botit Sopulissa?
V: Bottien salliminen Sopulissa riippuu tapauskohtaisesti. Spämmäävä ja ärsyttävä botti ei käy, eikä myöskään Redditistä ristiin sisältöä jakava botti. Muissa tapauksissa botti on sallittu.

Yes, it should also verify you are actually generating valid codes before completely switching on and possibly locking you out. The link did open an OTP app when clicked on a phone, but I could not choose which one and it seems the one that was opened would not have worked based on those posts I linked.

Lately, I’ve been struggling with joining interesting communities because they don’t show up in the search results. That changed when I started doing in this way:
- Go to lemmyverse.net and to find an interesting community
- paste the entire URL of the community to the search box on sopuli
- Wait a second or two. It takes a while. At first it doesn’t find anything, but soon it will. Actually, occasionally you need to press the search button twice.
- Join the community.
