America’s Education System is Failing. How Do We Fix It? - Lemmy.World

The U.S. education system is broken. Underfunded schools, overworked teachers, and massive disparities in quality depending on where you live. Meanwhile, countries like Finland, Sweden, and Denmark consistently rank among the best in the world. Some U.S. states, like Massachusetts and New Jersey, have taken a more Nordic style approach, prioritizing well funded public schools, high teacher standards, and universal access. The results speak for themselves. Students in these states outperform much of the country. So why are we not following their lead on a national scale? Should the Department of Education take a stronger role in setting national standards, equalizing funding, and ensuring every student, no matter their zip code, gets a high quality education? Or should education remain a state by state issue, even if it means vast inequality between states. Some push school choice as a solution, diverting funds from public schools to private and charter schools. But does this actually improve education, or does it just drain resources from the schools that need them most? The U.S. is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. There should be no excuse for having a failing education system. If we want to remain competitive, we need to stop making education a political football and start treating it like the national priority it should be. Genuinely curious what people think. All points welcome. How does this best get addressed?

I work in special Ed and I’m concerned about what will happen with those kids. Texas is already trying to gut public ed. It’s really difficult right now and i think it’s likely to get worse.

Just wait till the vouchers get trotted out and all the special tax exemptions for homeschooling. I fear for gen alpha and the kids coming after.

Thank you for working in Special Ed. I hope you’re able to weather what’s happening and what may come. My life was changed by an alternative learning classroom. You are making the world a much better place. Thank you.

Not for nothing but you think there’s going to be a Dept of Education next year?

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/trump-set-sign-executive-order-shuttering-department-education-rcna197191

The Fed Gov is not stable enough to rely on for any kind of National guidance.

I think it has to be grass roots and instead of a PTA bake sale it’s a PTA sit in at their representatives offices till funding is drummed up and secured. Isn’t this what all those lotteries were for?

However that’s not really possible in the states where it’s needed most as the parents are often working 2 jobs and do not have the time, nor the ability to have an arrest on their record that might jeapordise future employment.

So the young people need to protest. But now that’s difficult because they never had any civics courses, and their critical thinking is piss poor because, ya know, no schooling.

The system is working as intended. No one is coming to save you. Go to your local government meetings and raise hell. Everyone else is.

I appreciate the comment and agree that grassroots action is the only real solution, and that the people who need it most are too busy trying to get by. Definitely not an accident. The system benefits from keeping people uninformed and disengaged. If anything is going to change, it starts locally.
