Modern headlights are too bright. That’s just the reality of driving in this day and age. But is it simply an American problem, or is this a global issue? Why are headlights getting brighter in modern cars? Is this even legal? What are the dangers of LED headlights? And what can we do about this worrying trend? In this month’s Roman Report, we’ll talk all about LED headlights, why people are sick and tired of them, and why there’s reason for hope.

    It’s a global issue.

As a specialist in lighting, I can tell you that the people designing the headlights don’t know shit about optics for LEDs. They’re literally designing for arc lamps and only using reflectors; basically using the same optics that you used for the old lamps and shoe horning in the LEDs.

LEDs emit light in whatever direction they’re pointed at and the emitting surface area is tiny, which makes it extremely glarey. Right now, the headlight diffusers are clear, and some LEDs are aimed at reflectors which act like mirrors. This is what makes it very glarey.

What car manufacturers need to do is use optics to bend the light so that it’s aimed at the ground, not forward. They’ll never do it though; costs too much money.

The only way to change this is for governments to push policies.

And of course they have extra lights fitted. Was driving around a bend at night and thought the sun was coming around the corner.

My Audi has this problem. It has a control system that will turn the brights on unless it detects traffic (oncoming or that you are behind). The regular headlights are very bright. The brights are probably visible on the moon.
