I’ve been getting a connection timeout every now and then

Fingers crossed that one day a lemmy mod/admin will write a client for you.

    I really like info-dense screens.

Things have come a long way in the 18 months+ since I started this instance. The default UI may freeze occasionally but back at the beginning there was a cron job to restart it each night so it didn’t run out of RAM (IIRC, Lemmy.world had to restart every 30 mins). It has come a long way.

Plus now there are tools like the one to check federation is working, the automod, the batching tool that helps us keep up to date with the Lemmy.world flood of federation, and more.

If you like data, you could check out: https://grafana.lem.rocks/d/bdid38k9p0t1cf/federation-health-single-instance-overview?orgId=1&var-instance=lemmy.world&var-remote_instance=lemmy.nz

You can play with the settings, that’s set to Lemmy.world to Lemmy.nz federation. Or visit https://grafana.lem.rocks/ to see the different dashboards.

Edit: I’m wondering now if you meant the compacted post view of old.lemmy.nz but hey now you have some info screens of federation data 😀

Yeah I did just mean the compacted view but those grafana pages are fascinating so it worked out well for me.😃 Thanks!

We are so lucky to have the fediverse. I’m still blown away by how much better it is than overtly commercial algorithm-driven web 2.0 stuff.

Yeah I find it painful to use other sites without ad blockers. Often with ad blockers it’s still hard. The feed is often half ads or content you aren’t following. It’s quite refreshing to have a feed that is what it says it is.

Totally. I always have an ad blocker but even that isn’t enough to save you from random content on many sites. Had to go on fb recently and was shocked by how bad it is now. Even youtube with blockers keeps pushing really weird recommendations. The fediverse is more like how the internet was before corporates took over.

I still have a facebook account for family reasons but I never use it except for answering messages. When I did, there was an extension F.B. Purity that would take care of the ads as well as being a bit of a RES for facebook. You could edit settings to only show certain things in your feed, and other cool settings. But facebook in general is not something I want to be near these days.

I have one for reasons (contacts) but I don’t like it either… I wonder if FB Purity still works?

It’s not just the GUI or the algorithms though. It’s also all the hate speech and genocide.

The last update was less than a month ago so I’d guess it works: https://www.fbpurity.com/

You can remove all the posts from your feed that aren’t from your friends. I remember getting a bit lost in all the settings though.

If your friends are the ones with the hate speech and genocide, then… I guess you can block keywords? Or just un-friend them.

Oh interesting. Thanks heaps, I will definitely be adding that!

If your friends are the ones with the hate speech and genocide

Thanks this made me giggle uncontrollably for a moment there!

No I just mean using fb kind of makes my skin crawl on a moral level, because of its long-term willingness to aid in genocidal killings for years on end and its role in fomenting hate more generally.

Edit: Amnesty International report from a few years ago in case you’re wondering what I’m on about.
