Some time ago, I read an article that all messenger apps, by EU directive, would have to build bridge protocols in order to have flow of communication between different networks.

Surfing the web, I read an article from 2016 where the Signal protocol was being integrated into Whatsapp. More recently, I read that Signal and Telegram could communicate.

What is the true status on this? The more I search, the more contradicting information I seem to find.

This EU directive is formed to counter big walled gardens, like WhatsApp system. Signal could request interoperability, but isn’t interested, because it would lower security of conversations.

I believe WhatsApp, FB Messenger and Google’s RCS are using the same encryption protocol (TextSecure) for key exchange, but the platforms aren’t bridged as far as I know.

It will likely require a bit more work for the platforms to be interoperable.

If you read something to the effect of “Signal and Telegram can communicate,” it was probably in relation to the Beeper disaster app. I wouldn’t recommend that, because their entire gimmick was collecting all your messages on their servers for your convenience, defeating the whole point of Signal’s encryption.
