While he sold electric cars, one of the major money makers for Tesla has been carbon credits — Tesla gets more credits than it can use because it’s fully electric, so it sells those credits to ICE manufacturers for a profit. Those manufacturers then get to claim those credits and continue to produce cars that don’t qualify.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Tesla once they’re no longer being given credits to sell to the highest bidder.
