    Unpopular opinion:

They took the rare opportunity to improve their driving skills in slick conditions.

When I was learning to drive, this was encouraged. Go find an empty parking lot and learn how to regain control after sliding or fishtailing.

Yeah everyone should be encouraged to do this. Problem is when when the property owner doesn’t like it and calls the cops. They’re not likely to call the cops on the cops

I’ve literally been pulled over for doing doughnuts (in a parking lot) before.

Weird how the rules don’t apply to them.

This is a thing though. It is a great thing to practice handling in various conditions when it is safe to do so. I got my commercial driver’s license with an operating engineers labor union on an enormous property that included a police training facility among many others. I learned to drive on the high speed police track and the hydroplane training flood lot (was dry for me). They had special police cars that were made with roll cages and extra external tipping bars to make severe rollovers less likely. They did high speed pit manoeuvres and a lot of other practice stuff there. Practicing how to hydroplane at very high speed and control it is a major skill and watching them, they need a lot of practice. Only the pit maneuvers were done in heavily modified police cars, the rest were in regular cruisers. I absolutely want every cop to practice and train as much as possible. The difference between higher quality cops in places like Germany versus the USA is the amount of training. In Texas, a Republican state, I bet police training is garbage. Houston rarely ever gets this cold. I bet these poor guys have never had training on how to drive on ice. Would you rather them practice safely in situ or learn the hard way when they are responding to some call and you cross their path.

The difference is that this event in particular, as far as the article alleges, is unsanctioned.

Like I said, sanctioning doesn’t happen. I’d rather them be smart and dislike that they are being targeted here for doing a good job. I’m not pro police, but this is a dumb non issue
