Spike in fossil fuel use a result of global gas crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

This sub headline makes zero sense though, gas is a fossil fuel.

Article gets so much wrong. Unclear how much is Guardian and how much is EIA.

There is no gas shortage from war on Russia. EU was Russia’s main customer. US (and Qatar/other exporter) production ramped up due to extortion opportunities for EU. EU cut its NG use as well as its coal use, and there is a glut of US production.

China’s NG consumption is down, and instead of article’s claims, very good chance, based on data so far this year, that coal used in electricity production will be down or at least flat. Including a line of “blame China” in article is disinformation. India rising by 5% is a problem. The bright spot to India is that they are building local PV solar production capacity with over 100gw coming online each of next 2 years. They did relax import quotas/tariffs from China, and just signed a peace deal over their border issues. India is not passing through NG for energy transition.

Geopolitical BS is derailing energy transition significantly. US is consuming far more than it should, and intends to trap its domestic industry/consumers into FFs forever, and through geopolitical tyranny, will try to subjugate allies to worse. Russia has extreme industrial expansion required to protect itself from geopolitical demonism. Geopolitics is also forcing China to develop liquid fuels processing from coal which creates more emissions than oil extraction/refining process.
