But they don’t get as much use here because of issues with ice damning up the bottom edge and pooling water up under the tile, which then freezes and expands and dislodges or damags the tile. That can be overcome, but it’s easier and cheaper to use shingles.
You should clarify “here” a bit more. In AZ tile roofs are EVERYWHERE.
We end up replacing the underlayment more often than the actual tiles… unless the specific type of tile is no longer made and too many cracked for whatever reason.
What are those shingles? Pieces of tar?
