If I was playing Call of Duty and my landlord was on the other team, then I’d love to shoot my landlord.

    How about stop renting?

Landlords exist because people won’t put up the capital to purchase or enter into a loan for a house.

They exist as a stopgap so that people who want to be migratory can do so without the huge capital outlay of purchasing a place outright. Landlords exist, because people keep renting. The solution is to stop renting. But every time anyone suggests this, everyone always pretends like it’s not their fault.

The down payments and requirements for a mortgage are much higher than rentals. It’s a commonly reposted meme that you can’t qualify for a mortgage while you can afford to pay much more in rent.

But yeah rent isn’t the problem. Housing as an investment is the problem. Thousands of homes sit unoccupied because owners aren’t taxed enough to make selling or renting the property worthwhile.

Rent is still a problem because it’s exacerbating the inequality that’s leading to the housing crisis in the first place, but it’s a problem that’s downstream of the housing bubble.

And the other way around? People have worked together for 25 years to finally own a place and instead of just lazing around they buy another place to rent out.

Easy, stop planing and working towards a long term goal, just live day to day, the capitalist dream, do not save anything, pump it all out as soon as you get it. God I hate these superficial, absolutely not thought through “abolish landlords” etc.

That would require people to keep living with their family until they’re ready to buy a house. That isn’t always feasible. Nor is it an easy option in areas where big businesses are buying up real estate to turn the houses into rental properties, or areas with zoning laws that make new construction excessively difficult. I don’t want to do away with landlords either, necessarily, but telling people to “stop renting” isn’t too far removed from telling people who complain about excessive food prices to “stop eating.” We need places to live, at the end of the day.
