minus-squarecommie@lemmy.dbzer0.comlinkfedilinkarrow-up2·4 months ago Of farming specifically you’re clarifying that now, but it’s neither what you said nor supported by the data you provided. further, this claim the overwhelming majority of which is used to feed livestock just isn’t true. about 1/3 of global crop calories go to livestock, but even those calories are often parts of plants that people can’t or won’t eat.
minus-squarecygnuslinkfedilinkarrow-up1·4 months agoI don’t know why you’re so obsessively in the weeds on this. Numbers do vary depending on the source, but meat farming is unequivocally an ecological disaster. Meat and dairy specifically accounts for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). https://interactive.carbonbrief.org/what-is-the-climate-impact-of-eating-meat-and-dairy/ the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has released a new, lower estimate that livestock produce 11.1% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Peer-reviewed studies have put the figure higher, at up to 19.6% of emissions. https://thebreakthrough.org/issues/food-agriculture-environment/livestock-dont-contribute-14-5-of-global-greenhouse-gas-emissions More than two-thirds of all agricultural land is devoted to growing feed for livestock, while only 8 percent is used to grow food for direct human consumption https://woods.stanford.edu/news/meats-environmental-impact Anyway I’m done, anything beyond this is simply in bad faith.
