Unless you’re in Riverwood, then all the townsfolk become hostile and try and kill you.
(My first Skyrim play through I found out the hard way people are rather protective of their chickens.)
I did that too and I had to restart from the very start. Had to rewatch the beginning cutscene and remake my character because of that.
