This year was my first time growing garlic out on my own (my parents have grown garlic for a few years). I learned a lot this year and I can’t wait to plant again in the fall!
Quite the harvest!
Indeed! This year’s bulbs were a bit on the small side but I planted way late last fall and did very little weeding, so I’m not surprised. I’ve got mountains of notes going forward!
Beautiful! What variety is that?
This is Music garlic, a sub variety of Porcelain garlic. If you actually keep up with maintenance and the planting schedule you can end up with 5-6 clove bulbs the size of your fist! Great flavor and easy to grow
I grew a few kinds of garlic this year and music did the best. I’m definitely going to 100% music this fall
🥳
Wow they look incredible. Good job!
Thank you!
Very nice!!
Thank you!
How are they so clean? Did you just wash 'em?
Nope! After you harvest you can peel off the outermost layer, it doesn’t affect the curing process and leaves you with nice clean garlic! You can see the dirty ones in the background.
Nice! Now I feel stupid for not having done this before. I’ll try it with my next harvest.
No need to feel stupid, you’re one of today’s lucky 10,000!
Yay :D
Neat! How long do they stay fresh/edible? And what’s the best way to store them?
The ones I buy at the supermarket I keep in the fridge, is cold and dark the right way?
They stay fresh long enough to last til the next harvest! That’s why garlic’s always cured after harvest. For storage you want cool, dark, and dry, just like onions and potatoes. The fridge is actually a bit too humid for long term storage, I recommend either in a cellar or in the dryest, coolest part of your pantry.
Fun fact, if you’ve ever had your garlic sprout on you while storing it in the fridge it’s because sub-40°F temps are a core part of the growing process!
Nice! I’ll have to try it. Thank you! Garlic is awesome.
Indeed it is!
