Fair, it is called Vehicle Excise Duty. ‘Road tax’, ‘Car tax’ or even ‘Road fund license’ are all valid alternative names for it that people would know instantly.
So to go back to the point, I also believed the UK had the highest Vehicle Excise Duty in the whole of the European area.
I have not actually read up on that though, so am off to do it now.

UK seems to be on the lower end of vehicle taxes among European countries.
“Road tax” is a pretty harmful misnomer that implies the tax is paying for the roads (it isn’t) and that everyone using the road should pay the tax.
