Nick Robertson looked up from his stall in the corner of the Toronto Maple Leafs dressing room and surveyed the crowd of reporters nearby.

It was days before the Leafs’ bye week began, with the NHL trade deadline a little over a month away. As has become custom in Toronto young Leafs like Robertson have become thrust into the conversation as pieces who could be on their way out.

Robertson, 22, is still on his entry-level contract but has also logged time in five (!) different seasons in Toronto. He knows the drill.

“There’s trade talk?” he asks, tongue in cheek. “I feel like every year it’s the same thing around the trade deadline. For me, it’s not a challenge to stay away from that stuff.”

. . .

But given what Robertson has shown this season and the long-term instability in the Leafs roster, moving him is a gamble not worth taking.

If Keefe keeps scratching him, why not trade him for someone Keefe will actually use?

I like him, and yeah, I don’t want him traded but if Keefe’s not going to use him, it’s pointless having him on the team until Keefe is gone.
