A massively overbudget car park costing £870,000 has been built by a council currently making £8.4m in cuts.

It means each of the 37 spaces at the pay and display site on Monmouth’s Wyebridge Street has cost the taxpayer more than £23,500.

The original estimated cost is unclear but it was expected last year that it would be just over £500,000.

    1. Massively under quote costs and time to get contract to build carpark

    2. Begin build, wait until you are too far into it for it to be cancelled without the council looking foolish

    3. Cut staff to delay. Ramp up the costs

    4. Council continue to pay.

I’ve never understood why councils work in a way that allows for massive budget overruns. Time, yeah its not always easy to estimate. But when it comes to cost it should be “we are paying x amount for this. If you overrun, you eat the cost”. Forces bids to actually be accurate and an incentive to actually complete it in time.

Ironic that David Davies, who has been continually sparking the anti-motorist culture war, is opposing motorist infrastructure in his own town.
