    This is one of the spots where I wonder if the whole “If you see someone shoplifting, no you didn’t.” thing breaks down a bit.

        Food, diapers, etc. If they’re shoplifting a luxury lipstick or whatever while getting in their brand new SUV, that’s different…

          And if they’d try to shoplift a big-ass plasma TV I’d shoplift a bag of popcorn to watch that. Not exactly food, but I don’t think someone would judge me harsh for that.

        The rest of your reply chain, and seeing past iterations of such conversations, is exactly why I didn’t specify. You’ll find some versions of this conversation can go pretty far down the path of “you don’t know other people’s struggles” and “poor women deserve to feel like they look nice sometimes”.
